Today in class we took the middle ages test. I didn’t do that well I on the test because I didn’t like the material but I should’ve study harder and put more time into studying. I got a 73 and matt got an 80 which shocked me because matt usually doesn’t do better or even as well as me. Not trying to be rude but it is true.

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

Today in class matt and I taught the class for the middle Ages test tomorrow. I actually am not the interested in the middle ages as I was with Rome and Greece. I liked Rome and Greece because they actually did things for the world and evolved into bigger and better things, but with the middle ages they just basically took a step back and didn't do anything.

Charles “the hammer” Martel
Major domo- mean mayor of the palace in Latin

One of the most pivotal crucial battles in European history when Charles the hammer took on Muslims of the battle of tours, but Charles won.
Charles has a son Pepin the short
Pepin is working for the pope and the pope says Pepin is now king. Pepin was king by the grace of God.
Pepin had two sons Carolmeign and Charles.
His son Charles took over.
His son Charles is known as Charles the Great. Built the greatest since rome. Fought the muslims in spain. Spread Christianity. The most powerful king in western Europe.
Pope Leo the 3rd makes him emperor on Xmas day in 800AD.
His government
He limited the authority of the nobles. He regularly visited every place. Kept close watch on his huge estates. Encouraged learning, ordered monasteries to open up schools for everybody.
But his sons were pretty much weenies.

His son was Louis Pious was a quite prayer just sat back and very quiet. Than he based the power to his three sons. Lothair, Charles the Bald, and Louis the German. So they spilt up the empire. Called the Treaty of Verdun is 843 AD.

Germanic Kingdoms that unite with Charlemagne
Many Germanic kingdoms that do well are the ones that were reunited under Charlemagne’s empire.
Charlemagne spread Christian civilization through northern Europe, which is where many of us came from.
Middle ages= medieval period
500-1500 AD
Medieval Europe is fragmented
Invasions trigger changes in Western Europe
Invasions and constant warfare spark new trends. Disruption of trade. Europe’s cities are no longer economic centers. Money is scarce.
Downfall of cities. Cities are no longer centers of administration.
Population shifts. Nobles retreat to the rural areas. Cities don’t have strong leadership.
Invasions trigger changes in western Europe
Decline of learning. Germanic invaders are illiterate, but they communicate through oral tradition. Only priests and church officials could read and write. Knowledge of Greek is almost lost.
Loss of common language.
Dialects develop in different regions. By the 800’s French, Spanish, other roman based languages are evolving from latin.
Germanic kingdoms emerge
The concept of government changes. Roman society, loyal to public government.
Germanic society, loyal to family. Germanic chief led warriors. During peace he provided food, weapons, treasure, a place to live. During wartime warriors fought for the lord
Franks lived in the roman province Gaul –their leader in clavis.

The Franks under Clavis. Another battlefield conversion. Clavis and 3000 of his warriors are baptized by the bishop. The church in rome approves of this alliance. Clavis and the church begin to work together.

The church helps the poor, repair roads, raise armies. There’s no separation between church and state. The pope is acting as a king on earth.

Cesar Augustus was the 1st emperor.
Caligula- started off well, granting bonuses to those in the military. Declaring treason trials a thing of the past, and made government spending a matter of public record. He then began to fight with the senate. Claimed to be a god. He put statues of himself all over the place even in the Jewish temples. Spent much of the money of Rome on big huge orgies for him and his friend. He was just nuts. Assassinated by his own aides at 28 years old.
Next comes Claudius- he had a bad limp, speech impediment. Her rose to the occasion he expanded the Empire somewhat into Britain. He add on the roads and canals. He was doing all the right things. His wife was a tramp. And tried to have him killed and have her lover become emperor. So Claudius had his wife and her lover killed.
 Christianity and Judaism monotheistic.
Romans had many gods, plus at times the emperor was viewed as a god.
A group of Jews called the zealots tried to rebel against the Romans, but they failed so the Romans destroyed them and burned down their biggest temple except one wall. It is called the Western Wall. They claim it is there holiest of all Jewish shrines. Half of million Jews were killed during this rebellion.
Romans would be harsh to the ones that did not worship the emperor. Especially Christians who were viewed as followers of a new upstart religion. Despite the oppression, Christianity grew quickly by AD 200 around 10 percent of the people in the Roman empire were Christians.

Et tu, Brute? Is Latin for even you Brutus?
After Cesar was killed his grandnephew took over named Octavius.

Octavian- AKA Caesar Augustus. He took over at the age of eighteen. Some people tried to knock him out of power and he had them killed. He is known as the first emperor. Begins the Pax Romana- Latin for roman peace. Built roads. Aqueducts which brings water from rivers to the city. Set up civil service to take care of roads, the grain supply, even a postal service. Took at power at age 76 in A.D.

Jesus- was a roman citizen and a practicing Jew. At 30 he began his ministry, preaching to the poor in the empire, and reaching out to outsiders. Statements like “ my kingdom is not of this world” made the Romans and the jews nervous, and they began to plan his execution. The governor of the Roman province of Judaea, Pontius Pilate ( prompted by Jewish high priests), sentences Jesus to death by crucifixion.

August means the honored one

if you were elected to the house that elects someone from the middle or lower class you were called a tribute.

He ruled with an iron fist. so the people  threw him out of power and ostracize him. He was the last king in Rome. They used him as an example to never be like him. After they threw him out they mad their own form of government which is democracy, aristocracy and monarchy all in one. the US molded their government from this.

Ostracize- means to cast out; to be sent out.

All the city states are supplying money for army and goods. Athens is one of the coolest places to live it was like modern day New York. He even died from the plague.
Hubris- means that you are so arrogant and think you’re the smartest person in the room. And think that you are always right.
So Pericles being so hubris he tries to attack Sparta just because he wants to. And everything went wrong. He tries to take over their water ways and surround them. he thought Sparta would just give up. The biggest thing that went wrong is that the ships that were bringing in supplies the ships brought in people who were sick and huge amounts of people became sick. The Greeks had a water supply and trying to go to the water supply to get water but once they get their they die in the water supply so the water is no polluted .

The oracle of Delphi- the Greeks had this belief that there were certain people who could see the future.

1. The Egyptians had three innovations and inventions that shaped the world as we know it. They had the sailboat which was used for sending goods up and down the Nile without a lot of manual power. They had the calendar which was used for trying to figure out when the Nile would flood. And they had paper which they could keep their alphabet written down on and many other things.
2. Three important features of an Egyptian pyramid are burial site for Pharos, the secret passage ways, and the great foundation. The pyramids held the home to dead very important Pharos of the time. The pyramids had many different secret ways so no one could break in and take the wealthy. And last they had a very great foundation for the pyramids still standing to this day. It was great architecture.

The social hierarchy of ancient Egypt was like a pyramid. You have your pharaohs on the top then you have your priest and nobles, soldiers, scribes, merchants, artisans, farmers, and then last you have slaves and servants. The Pharaoh was the one who could speak to the god’s. He was all powerful he was worshiped as a God. The priest and nobles were ones who worked with or for the royal family in some sort of way. The soldiers were your fighters, they protected the city with all their might. Your scribes were the ones who learned to read and write. The merchants were the guys who would sell the goods that you need to live off of. The farmers were the ones who cared for the lands and cared for the cattle. If it was me I would want to be a Pharaoh and make bank.
Living on the Nile River is very important because it is the main water supply in Egypt at the time. If you lived on the Nile than you were making bank. You had a way to have clean water whenever you need it. You had a way to ship your goods down the river. You also had a supply of fish and other beings in the river. You could use the water for many things like watering your crops and also using it to mix with dirt to make a clay so you could build.

Today in class we talked about early Egypt. We talked about how there are 5 elements of Egypt which are geography, pyramids, daily life, Pharaohs, Goddesses and Gods. Everything centered on the Nile. The Pharaohs were the head of the government and the head of the religion. The scribes and soldiers were also high up there in the food chain. The slaves and servants also had a better life than most slaves had in America because they were house slaves.

Today in class we started reading LO3 Egypt. Egypt was called Land of the Pharos. During the Neolithic age the people in the Nile moved to living a more civilized lives. Which the people living more civil it made the rise of more cities of Sumer. But the more stable civilizations were Egypt. I forgot to take my book home so I couldn’t read any more of the notes. So we also went over in class of what we did. And fixed a problem learning that humans were on this earth 2,000,000 years ago, but back then we were more like apes then humans it wasn’t till 14,000 years ago that humans started to act like humans do today.

Today in class is the day Jevan and I taught the class and let me tell you it was one darn well taught class. We had to get three laws from Hammurabi's code.
1. If a slave says to his master: "You are not my master," if they convict him his master shall cut off his ear.
I think with this one that it would make more sense to cut the slaves tongue out so he could not speak.

2. If a son strike his father, his hands shall be hewn off.
This is one makes sense so ya I guess for this time it would be fine.

3. If any one is committing a robbery and is caught, then he shall be put to death.
This one i agree with for that time of the earth.

Today in class we officially started chapter one. We got new books but technically they are not new they are old but they are new to us. We took notes on early and pre historic times. I learned the Sumer was the first ever tribe or people to ever use a form of writing. That 200,000 years ago to 14,000 years ago between that time gap there was no collection of any type of history. Back then everyone was a hunter and gather. And if you were a hunter you had a higher social class then if you were a gather or a sandal maker.
